Question:

What Should I Prepare For In College/University?

So both academically and socially, what adjustments will I have to make?

I've never lived away from home. Never really been drunk. Never even been in the vicinity of drugs. Will there be a lot of s*x, drugs and alcohol?

Any stories or advice anyone has to give?

  1. It depends on your surroundings really but in general there will be a lot of promiscuous s*x because of the new-found independence, drugs for the same reason, and alcohol because of homework.

Really though, it's not that bad. As long as you don't hang out with (or room with) complete losers, then those things won't really affect you.

Be careful with academics though. You're managing your own studies to a larger degree now and they are faster paced. Some classes don't ever have homework, just 2 or 3 tests that your grade completely rides on. If you're not careful, it's very easy to get behind in courses like those.

  2. A lot of freshmen go crazy that first week at school just because they're finally away from home. Just be careful if you're out partying at frats or something; some upperclassmen may take advantage of you (ie slip something in your drink). There is definitely s*x, drugs, and alcohol - just use your best judgment.

Academically- It is different from high school. No one cares if you go to class or not. No one is forcing you to go. Tests might be a little harder, but if you had good study habits in high school, you should be fine.

Socially- It might seem daunting at first, but everyone else you're dorming with are all new students and are all trying to make friends. Just be yourself, and soon enough, you'll find your niche of friends. It's good to join clubs because you can new people too.

Good luck for your first year!

  3. Never talk behind peoples backs, because most likely they'll hear about it. And just be relaxed at all times. Stressing out is worthless. Don't be fake as well. Don't miss class, because once you miss one class, you'll feel like missing class is not so bad and it feels so good, but it's real dumb. Of course theres a lot of drugs and alcohol and s*x.  But no one should peer pressure you into doing any of them if you hangout with cool people. Stay away from people like me, I get the worst out of people. get people that never smoked a thing in their life to smoke and drink.

  4. Don't let the s*x, drugs and alcohol freak you out too much.  These things have been going on since the dawn of time...  well, at least since there have been colleges.

Academically:  Like somebody else said, nobody cares if you go to class, they don't care if study or not, but at the same time nobody cares if you fail.

So, do the party thing in moderation... (if you do it at all).  A lot of students put everything off until the last minute and wind up cramming for the final, or staying up for days to get that paper finished.  Avoid doing this.

Socially:  The best way to adjust socially is to get involved.  Join clubs that interest you.  Take advantage school sponsored trips (rafting, theme parks, hiking, etc.).

    good luck
