This question is asked a lot on here but i have a little diffrent question.

I want to start on a fun boarb but move to a shortboard later. Im 6'2" and 180lbs. I was told to get like a 7'8" board. But i was also told if i want to move to a short board faster get a 7' or 7'6" board.

If i get a 7' funboard will it float me? I would rather have a smaller board. But here in Japan the waves are not always big. So can i surf of 7' or is it impossible!?

  1. Good ole Santa Cruz Sol Surfer has it right. There are lots of factors to consider other than length. At 6'2", you might even want to think LONGER. Usually the longer the board, the easier it is to learn on. But width (at it's widest point) and thickness have a lot to do with how the board floats you, and your ability to take off on a wave. Go to a real surf shop (and I know you have real surf shops in Japan, don't go to a bathing suit store that sells surfboards) talk to the surfers there. they will help you make the right choice. It's easiest and best to start on a long board, but the fact of the matter is, you can start on any board that you can catch a wave on. In the 70's, during the short board revolution, lots of surfers started on short boards without ever riding anything else.

  2. the best way is to stand with one of your arms up. however tall that is, get that size board.

  4. I weigh the same as you, and am the same height, and i was in the same position, i decided to get a hybrid, if you like, a 6'10 shortboard/funboard and it rides beautifully, really good if you want to move onto a shortboard later as it gives you the feel for the smaller boards. Seeing as the waves are small you will need a 7' as you stated, and i think you should catch them with that size. First before you buy, make sure you try out the board for the day, if you like it go for it, if it was a lil bit off, steer clear, as you won't get anywhere! I hope this helped!

  5. a board's surfability depends on many other factors besides its length; in fact, a board's width and thickness are probably more important to consider. for example, you could probably learn just fine on a 5'10", 21", 3" fish or a 8', 22", 2 3/4" mini-mal. but about funshapes, if you're 6'2" you should probably look for a board in the range 7'2"-7'6", 19 3/4"-21", and over 2 1/2" thick. the thickness of the board is the primary factor in determining how buoyant it is.

  6. i weigh the same and went from 7'10 to a 7'3 and am almost ready for a short board like 6'8 or longer, if you make it to a shortboard, youll want to keep the funboard for the small wave days that the shortboard won't be able to catch
