  1. id say about 15.3 hands at least because you are close to six foot.  Weight should not be a problem.

  2. By far most trail riders prefer horses between 14.2 and 15.2 hands.  Most people claiming to have horses over 16 hands, actually do not have horses that reach 16 hands (that may simply be a western type riding phenomenon though).

you weigh in at 182 pounds so the smallest horse you need will depend on what you want to do with it.

Backyard short rides and a horse can carry 30% of its weight.

    light riding 25%

    Competition 20%

Remember that this includes saddle and tack and assumes a horse in resonable shape.

  3. It depends on what you want to do with the horse and what type of horse you want.

I'm almost 5' 9" and weigh 115lbs, my horse is a 15hh Paint horse.  We do trail riding mainly, and I ride Western.  I know most English riders tend to use taller horses especially for showing.

  4. You should have lessons first!

    I'm 5' 10" and I feel daft on anything under 16.2hh - however, I have especially long legs so I'd say 16hh +

  5. At least 16.2

  6. I have a 14.3HH horse, and I'm 5'4", so i'd say for you smallest would be 16.1HH, but why go smaller? I'd say get one that is around 16.2 or 16.3!

  7. 16'2 to 18 hands would be a good height for you. Though 16'3 seems like it would be just right ^-^

    hope that helps

  8. Well I'm 5ft 4ich and like 15hh. Anything between 15.2 and 16.

  9. Are you going for the smallest horse possible because you want to be closer to the ground in case of a fall? That's one of the common reasons I've seen bigger people going for smaller horses, because they are a bit shy of taller horses for fear of falling. If that's the case I would focus more on an older horse with a sweet disposition who doesn't spook easily.

If you're worried that you're too big for most horses to carry, you're not. Even a sturdy pony could carry you fine. What is more important for the horse is that you are in shape and keep your balance and ride effectively.  A heavy rider who rides in balance with the horse is better to carry than a small rider who is not in balance because they are more likely to throw the horse off balance.

Horses weigh a lot. Considerably more than you could ever weigh so worrying that you're too much for him is pretty mute. If you have long legs you may be more comfortable on a taller horse but it's not necessary. The main thing is to make sure you are physically fit to ride (even walking for 20 min a day helps) and learning to stay centered on a horse will make him (however tall he is) much more comfortable.

  10. I'm 5 ft 2in and i have a quarter horse probably 15.1-2 hands so ur like 8 in taller than me so um 15.3 i would say or even 15.1 shes the perfect size for me

  11. i would say 15.3
