  1. Life near the surface of Mars would have to deal with the soil there.  Spirit and Opportunity have found some very salty soil.  Phoenix found slightly alkaline soil. Life underground making use of liquid water will need some sort of energy source, since the Sun will not be available.

    Most likely any life would be really small, like bacteria.
