  1. Rags to Riches just won the Belmont Stakes last year she is the most famous now.  Anytime a filly can beat colts she has it all.  We will see how she does in the breeding shed but what a great runner .

  2. Since you said mare and not filly, I'd say Makybe Diva.

She won the Melbourne Cup 3 times (Phar Lap won it twice).  She beat younger fillies, colts, and horses each time.

She won at age 5, 6 and 7.  Since she's Australian, she's not too well known in the USA.

Not too many great fillies go on to race as mares (age 5 and older).  Ouija Board recently won the Breeders' Cup filly and mare turf at age 5 before retiring.

In North America, maybe Azeri, who won horse of the year at 4 and champion older female at 4, 5, and 6.  Or maybe Bayakoa, who won the Breeders' Cup Distaff at age 5 and 6.

  3. My opinion would be Ruffian.

  4. IDK, Some people have different opinions.

I would say in broodmares Ashado and Octave.

In racing Rags to Riches and Ginger Punch.

  5. ruffian, Although she didn't live long enough to become a mare, she was still a filly when she died.

So then my vote will go to her mother shenanigans.

  6. The most famous and greatest from the U.S. would be:Ruffian,Personal Ensign,Susans girl,Arts and Letters,Shuvee,Go for Wand,Lady's Secret (who was Secretariats greatest filly) Davona Dale,Genuine Risk,Bayakoa.

  7. Ruffian, Go for Wand, Winning Colors, and more recently Rags to Riches!

  8. Ruffian.  She was the most talented filly ever.  She equalled or broke records in most every start and no horse ever came close to her.  She won by as much as 15 lengths and was ahead at every point of call in every race she ever ran.  She was never beaten as she was on the lead when she broke down.  Her courage and will to win were amazing as she ran through the freshly popped splint in the Sorority as well as when she fought with Jacinto for 50 more yards before she agreed to give up the match.

And Ruffian wasn't just a great thoroughbred.  She was an icon.  She was a beacon in a turbulant time when Americans were fighting for or against the idea of equality.  Ruffian gave us a chance to project our emotions onto a sport as she battled with the Kentucky Derby winning colt Foolish Pleasure.  At a time when America really wanted to know if girls could really equal boys, Ruffian was there to show us that it was true.

There have been many great fillies and will be many more, but unless we have a filly win the triple crown, none will ever be more famous than the great undefeated filly Ruffian.

  9. my vote is split Ruffian for all reasons already given. There will never be another like her.But for one day WINNING COLORS went down in the history of  the sport.winning the Kentucky Derby.

  10. my vote would go to DAWN RUN as a steeplechaser she won both the champion hurdle and the gold cup at the cheltenham festival ,sadly she was to die in a fall while running in the french chapion hurdle ,just a short few weeks after her famous gold cup victory.
