  1. I dont know much about ships sorry

  2. They are a type of diesel but run on crude oil and big. QE2 does about 9 inches to a gallon tax that mr tax man!

  3. Massive low speed diesel engines normally.(150 rpm)

These engines are so big that once installed, and the ship built round them, they can`t be economically removed.

It is sometimes cheaper to scrap the ship!

  4. 6-12 cylinders inline

On some ships you can stand inside the cylinder

The crankshaft alone weighs 300 TONS

Some run on fuel oil, some Diesel, some are gas/diesel turbine

  5. Many bulk carriers will have multiple diesels serving one or two propellers.  Fairbanks Morse,  General Motors EMD,  Pielstick,  Sultzer( a 4 cylinder that produces 8800 HP), are some of the popular ones.  Some burn diesel others a mid grade 280 fuel.

There are still some steam powered boats around, either turbine or reciprocating on some real old timers.

Some use combination of diesel or steam and electric to move the boat.

Do not forget the 1000 or more HP thrusters nearly all bulk boats have now days.

  6. insanely large diesels, the bore is normally about 30" with a 80" stroke (per cylinder, minumum 8 cylinders, always an inline engine)

most are supercharged these days, many never top 105 rpm

otherwise some will have gas turbines, but those engines are mostly found on cruise liners

  7. A Whole range of engines from  Geared Steam Turbine ships , Large bore Diesel 2 stroke engines. medium speed multiple engine installations, Diesel electric installations and in the new Queen passenger ships a Gas turbine top up installation.  Container ships and Tankers tend to be Large bore Diesel engines up to 48000 hp on a single shaft. 105 rpm max is typical for a big engine. I was an engineer on Super tankers, we used 70 odd tons of fuel a day to do 15 Knots.

  8. Large ships routinely have  massive 2 stroke diesels as their main engine. Check out the links below:
