  1. Well I say do either Boxing or kickboxing. Karate or takwondow is not going to be good for you cause you can't do the flying kicks and don't have stamina for it. Boxing will really bring out the best in you.

  2. Jiu-jitsu :)***

  3. Hi.

You will get out of a martial arts style what you put in.  if you put in hard work and dedication with the goal of getting (or staying) in shape then that's exactly what you will get even if it isn't that styles specific emphasis.

If you like kicking then Tae Kwon Do is your style, it's also very athletic so it's sure to keep you in shape.  However there are a lot of high flying fancy kicks.  Also if you’re looking for something effective toward the purpose of self defense of street combat then I'm not sure Tae Kwon Do is your best option, it's more of a sport art.  This really depends on the specific school and how it's taught; some Tae Kwon Do schools will teach other styles as part of their curriculum to round out the style a little better.

A grappling style like Jujitsu would be physically demanding enough to suit your needs and is practical for many combat situations.  However it requires you to get tangled up with your opponent in order to subdue him, if you face multiple attackers it doesn't work so well.

Karate is a category of styles, not so much a style in and of itself so we would have to get a little more specific than that.  Kenpo Karate for example is very practical and can be physically demanding if you put the work into it.  Generally karate is great for what you are looking for, it's al in finding the right school.

Muay Thai is physically demanding and practical for combat, it good for striking with you hands, feet, elbows, knees and shins and may not be at well rounded as some, but that doesn't at all mean it's not effective.

I have heard of a semi-local school that teaches Bagua Kung Fu and that just the warm ups are physically demanding.  A lot of good stance work it that style.  As to it's effectiveness I am unable to say (though it does look really, really cool :P)

These are just a few suggestions with a couple attached pros and cons.  Again, you will get out of martial arts what you put in.  If you are looking to be pushed into getting in shape then I think you need to look for a school in where the instructors will do that for you as a specific style has little to do with that aspect.

Hope this helps and good luck finding a school/choosing a style :)

  4. Definately karate or tae kwon do. I do karate

  5. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai

  6. I think you should definitely try Tae Kwon Do! It's not as common as Karate and people will be impressed by your skills!

  7. Try karate. It is a good basic for those starting new with martial arts. I am currently doing Aikido, and I noticed that many who are good at it tend to have strong martial arts foundation in punching and kicking.

All that kicking and punching is good for building muscle and losing weight.

And from what I know, Karate lesson are fairly cheap.

  8. Tai chi will be a good place to start. I began tai chi while recuperating from major surgery and have being doing it for seven years; along with my other martial arts activities.

It will enhance your other athletic abilities and other more aggressive martial arts styles.

  9. lol being out of shape and kicking is going to be a task.

I'd start with... well after football season, if you join, you're going to be somewhat in shape if you put time into it.

Personally I'm going into Muay Thai in a week or two. I'd done quite a bit of research on it and it seems like a good start. I'd do that.
