Question:

What Type of Glue?

I have a bike with a steel frame, and the seat tube is 28.6mm diameter. This is smaller than the common standard sizes of 31.8mm and 34.9mm. To compensate for this, the derailler that the bike came with had an adapter unit (basically two pieces of metal that pad out the gap between the derailler clamp and the seat tube.

Anyway, I removed this adapter from the original derailler - it was glued to it with a very good kind of glue. The glue held it in place, but did not prevent me from removing it (with significant force) and did not take any of the chrome plating off when I removed the adapter. The glue is very soft (as opposed to other glues which try rock solid), and is also pretty stretchy.

I would like to use the same glue again for fitting this adapter to another front derailler, anyone know what type of glue it is?

Thanks!

  1. Sounds like silicone.

"Goop" makes several varieties of their sealant/adhesive that you might like.  Fairly easy to apply and remains pliable as you describe.
