Question:

What Type of Irons??? Can't decide between Callaway X-Tour or the Ping I10?

Hello. I recently have been lookin into investing in new irons to replace my really old worn out ones. I am a 8 handicapper and have narrowed down my choices to either the Ping I10's or the Callaway X-Tour irons. I am a long-ball hitter who sometimes tends to have problems with accuracy. I have tested them both and and found them both very solid, good quality, and comfortable clubs. Thanks for your help.

  1. Choosing golf clubs is a personal decision.  I have Pings and I have been happy with them but you certainly can't go wrong with the Callaway.

One thing you did not mention was the type of shafts.  I tested different clubs with different shafts and I end up selecting steel shafts for my irons because I was more accurate with them than with the graphite shafts.  To me accuracy is more important especially if I am hitting the ball to the green.

  2. I don't personally like the tumbled finish of the Pings, so it would be Callaway for me, all other things being equal.

  3. It seems to me you are more interested in controlling the ball (accuracy) and you are a long hitter.  Have you ever considered Callaway X-Forged instead?

  4. You can't go wrong with Ping and the fitting system is the best.

    I want Ping I10s also.....

  5. Has to be your decision ultimately on which you fell you hit better.  I play the X-Tours and they are not that forgiving (although more than most forged clubs).  Ping generally more forgiving, but less feel.

  6. If you would like a little help keeping the ball in the air, the center of gravity of the Callaways is the lower of the two. Of the two, the sweet spot is a hair farther toward the toe on the Callaways also which keeps the MOI a hair higher. In general the Pings might play a little more workably, the Callaways a little more forgiving, with the lofts a touch weaker in the Pings.

  7. I agree with the answer above, go with the X-Forged.  I just bought a set, and wow are they nice.  The X-Tour was Callaway's first real attempt at a player's iron, so they are a beta release at best, and to be honest, they suck.  I play the X-Forged, and they are a nice set of irons.  I demoed the Nike Forged (Tiger's club), Titleist blades, and the X-Forged.  I know you are asking about Callaway and Ping, but a little experience.  If you aren't tiger, the Nike's sucks, same with the Titleist.  The X-Forged are a nice set of player's irons.  They give honest feedback, excellent shot making ability, true distance and are a fun club to play.  Like all forged style clubs they are not the easiest to hit.  If you are an 8 and getting better, go with the X-Forged, if you are a steady 8-10 handicap, the X-20/X-20 Tours are a little easier to hit.  Either way get fitted!!!!

My vote is for the Callaway's, excellent clubs with lots of low scores in the waiting!
