  1. Most of the time the guy in the border booth is half asleep (or maybe even drunk).

  2. No ID, no entry...And you need to show them a valid passport.

  3. When I entered Mexico, they looked at my passport and gave me a tourist visa, which I kept all the time I was there. They took it when I left. I also carried my passport when I was driving there, even though I never went more than about 50 km from where I was staying.

It is always in your own best interest to have a passport when you enter any foreign country, whether it is needed or not, because you never know what kind of situations will arise there.

  4. If you're traveling by land they probably won't even speak to you.  When I enter they just wave me on through at the border and if I didn't stop myself to get my visa stamped I would probably never be checked for anything.

  5. To enter  Mexico and to re-enter the U.S. By LAND, you must have your birth certificate and a photo I.D. To FLY to and from Mexico, you must have a passport.  See site below to read the law for yourself.

  6. Generally, when you ENTER Mexico they don't even bother to wave.  It's the trip BACK into the U.S. when things can get interesting.  Since you are going to need a passport to get back into the U.S. in less than a year... just have your passport ready and you should get along OK if they ask for any ID.
