I've heard flying to Iceland before going to Scandinavia can get you cheaper rates, but what US cities fly direct to Iceland? Chicago, Madison or Detroit would probably be the best cities to fly from, though there are some other options. Thanks!

  1. Minneapolis, Boston, New York JFK, Sanford (Florida).  They used to fly from BWI, and 2 summers ago from San Francisco.  They re-started service to Halifax last year, and began new service from Toronto.  http://www.icelandair.com

It's not necessarily cheaper with Icelandair.  Sometimes they have very good "lucky saver" email fares -- if you sign up on their site, and can travel in the off season without much notice.

Try CHI, MSN and DTW to STO, CPH, OSL with http://www.bookingbuddy.com   Among these, the only nonstop is SAS's flight between Chicago and Stockholm, so you'd have to connect anyway, unless you happen to need CHI-STO.  You could get good connections with Continental, Lufthansa, and NW/KLM for example.

  2. Here is a an airline route map for Icelandair. It has nonstop service with Minneapolis- St. Paul. http://www.airlineroutemaps.com/Europe/I...

  3. Newark, NJ (EWR) to Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH) $1711 RT

  5. go look at www.icelandair.com - that's the airline that the people who told you that were referring to.  The last I heard, they were considering Chicago-area service.
