For what? They have there strong points. So does CalTech, Golden State, San Bernardino, San Jose State. It depends on what you want to study.

Depends.

As far as an undergraduate education...I'd say they're all fairly streamlined.  (Unless you calculate other variables like financial commitment, setting -both in and out of the classroom- , alumni network etc...)  

At the graduate level there are clear differences.

Overall reputation?  That also depends.  Academic circles will judge differently compared to popular perception.  

Academic rigor?  Stanford has a slight edge.  Although UC faculty members are research giants (as are Stanford faculty), I've noticed that the quality of student has fallen off a bit since the days of Chancellor Ting at Berkeley.  Just my humble opinion...they'll let any idiot into the UC now.  I taught a few classes at Cal and I was often astonished that some of these students managed to graduate high school.
