I thought that oldenburg stallions could be bred to thoroughbred mares and the foal could register as an oldenburg but im not sure... Does anyone know in what breeds (specifically jumper breeds), if any, this is acceptable in the United States?

  1. Any warm bloods may be bred to thoroughbreds to produce a get that may be registered with the American Sport Horse Registry -http://www.isroldenburg.org/ - you can get more info here

  2. There is a requirement for conformation inspection of Thoroughbreds intended for use as Oldenburg breeding stock.  The Oldenburg website gives information:  http://www.isroldenburg.org/.  I don't know the details, but my dressage trainer submitted her Thoroughbred mare for approval and I gathered that passing the inspection is not a mere formality.

The Trakehner registry has also historically allowed Thoroughbreds and Arabians to be used to produce Trakehner stock.  This is the URL for their website, which has information on the process:  http://www.americantrakehner.com/#

I believe that the Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Dutch, and Westphalian breeds of Warmbloods also allow Thoroughbred mares which have passed their inspection process to be used as breeding animals.  Websites:  http://www.hanoverian.org/index.shtml

    http://www.holsteiner.com/

    http://www.nawpn.org/

    http://www.westphalians.com/home.htm

FWIW, unless you intend that the offspring of the Thoroughbred mare be used in a Warmblood breeding program, it might be more expense and trouble than it's worth to go through the inspection and approval process.  If you want to breed a horse or horses for your own use, with no intention to become a commercial breeder, it doesn't matter what papers (if any) the horse has-- performance is what you need, and registration has no affect on performance.

The impression I got from my dressage trainer is that the process of having a Thoroughbred mare inspected and approved by any of the Warmblood registries involved a fair amount of time, effort and money.  She wanted to have it done because she wanted to sell the foals her mare produced, and their value was increased if she could market them as registered Oldenburg.

Anyway, I hope this helps you.  Good luck!
