Saskatchewan was the first province to institute in the early 1960s.  The premier was Tommy Douglas (recently voted most important Canadian of all time)  who insisted on universal, single payor healthcare.  The doctors in saskatchewan at the time revolted and went on strike for quite some time.  Saskatchewan brought docs over from the UK to fill in during the strike and eventually local docs got their head around the issue and went back to work.

Socialized medicine was instituted in all parts of Canada in 1965.
