  1. One of them was certainly the wide spread use of packet switching technology for data communications.  It began with X.25 that was the original communications protocol for the Arpanet, which became the Internet. This technology was invented by Leonard Kleinrock of UCLA.   Packet switching allows multiple sender/receiver pairs to share the same physical medium.  

    Packet switching is the essential technology that allows the Internet to function, even though many new protocols have been added since 1980.
