Booking a trip way in advance is usually A LOT cheaper. You can get cheaper hotel rates and almost ALWAYS you can get WAY cheaper flight ticket rates by booking far in advance!

In advance vs last minute... but sometimes airlines would run semi last minute sales.. say 2-3 weeks before.. and those would be cheapest.  Times have changed I guess, after 9/11 and with high oil prices/cutbacks.  It's probably more difficult to find fairly last minute bargains now.

I work for a holiday company and it can vary on time of year.  At the minute, our late deals are cheaper than our summer 09 holidays, you just get the best choice by booking early.

Ordinarily I would say way in advance, but a few years ago, I found some blockbuster deals at the last minute,and then even after I booked, I found better deals, so I am not sure.  I do know that if you are doing air only, you should book as far in advance as possible, especially if you are flying around holidays, but at non-holiday times I have also found deals closer to when I wanted to travel, so I don't really know.  I always used to think way in advance, but now I am not so sure.  but your question asks -  holiday  -  for sure way in advance unless you are flexible for travel dates.
