  1. Language arts teacher here ....

Let's see, all sorts of things you can write in a comparative essay. If you are comparing, you are seeing where the stories are similar (same.) If you are contrasting you are seeing where the stories are different. I have not read, not do I desire to read the essays you listed ... but this should still help you.

This is an expository piece of writing you are doing (information piece.)

Assuming this is a short story (not a novel or even a novella .. but really short stories, here are some wonderful ideas where you may wish to compare, contrast or do both .. compare and contrast. You decide!

Read both stories and talk about the following ...

    1. What is the theme to each story. In otherwords, what is the authors message / lesson to the reader. Are the themes similar (compare) or different (contrast.)

    2. Look at the main characters in teach story. Talk about differences and similarities in their personality. How does each characters handle conflict? Are they similar? If so, how? Are they different? If so, how.

    3. Discuss the time period of each story. Does the time period reflect the language used? A story written years ago may use slightly different vocabulary than a short story written a few years ago.

    4. Look at the authors? What is the background of the authors? Does the background reflect their stories? In otherwords, if one author is from a depression (poverty) era, does their story reflect their life?

    Hope this helps.
