If your talking about fishing the lake Michigan tributaries, then trout or salmon eggs would be your best bet.  In fact the best bait for trout is trout eggs.

Stream trout or Lake trout? A bit of a difference.

If you're after stream trout then Roe has always been a good performer pretty well anywhere. If it's the monster Lake trout you're after then in summer you'll need a downrigger and bright spoon with some attractant or even Roe on the hooks. You'll need a boat. You'll only be finding these fish in deep water.

Trout like night crawlers, earth worms. They also bite on artificial trout eggs made from marshmallows, orange in color and often garlic flavored.
