  1. aside from what's already been said - not sure what your experience level is but the basics are always good, for example a left hook/right low kick off the cross counter/slip is pretty good. Basic and effective.

  2. Think more in terms of style than actual combos.

Success in sparring doesn't come from having good combos - it comes from reading the other guy and changing up to beat his game.

Here are a few effective ways of switching up to keep your opponent off balance:

    1) Switch the amount of power you use - example: throw a few quick jabs and he'll start to respond with a simple parry - then throw a power jab which should get past his guard.

    2) Switch your rythmm (this is hard, but effective) - throw a combo 1,2,3.  repeat 1,2,3.  then throw it 1, PAUSE, 2/3 fast and hard.  You can get behind his blocking by just resting a half beat and then going hard and fast.

    3) Switch your entry - example : close the gap with a left head punch, then move back.  Then use a right side body kick, move back.  Then a high right/low right combo - move back.

4)Counter punch - it's hard, but super-effective.  If your defense is good enough to stay in striking distance, you can really keep an opponent off guard by staying inside and jamming up his punches.  This takes training on defense and throwing short punches with power (uppercut & hook are very effective once you are inside).  example : opponent throws right roundhouse to your body.  You block by stepping INTO the kick and catching the thigh with your blocking arm - getting inside the kick takes away the power of the kick and he will typically cover high (cover his face/head).  The instant the kick touches you, step in and throw a hard right straight to the body.  Works 90% of the time because he is expecting you to back up.  Moving into a strike is unusual, so most guys will turtle-up and give you 1 or 2 open shots (your uppercut/hook) before they recover.

You have the idea now, I hope - attack at different height, speed, power or sides, and move in when you are expected to move out.  Keeping your opponent guessing and throwing basics correctly is 100% better than throwing a few combos really well.
