On an each-way bet, half the stake covers the win whilst the remnant covers upto 3 other places.

You spend £2 - £1 of which is automatically lost.

Your horse came in 2nd, 3rd or 4th; the odds were 12/1; you get 1/4 odds or 3/1 so your pound becomes £4, less tax if not paid before race!  This is because you receive your stake plus the odds x the stake as a return.
