PORTLAND, Maine – Two teenage girls, seriously injured when they were hit by a freight train as they sunbathed on the track, remain hospitalized today at Maine Medical Center.

Destiny Phaneauf, 13, of Lebanon, Maine, is in fair condition, according to a hospital spokesman. One of her legs was amputated below the knees in the accident. Rachel Brown, 14, also of Lebanon, who had a foot severed, is in satisfactory condition.

The accident happened in Lebanon, Maine, near Milton Three Ponds Dam, an area popular with both Maine and New Hampshire kids for sunbathing and jumping from the railroad trestle into the water.

"We've been trying to avoid this," Police Chief Mark McGowan of Milton, on the New Hampshire side of the trestle, told the Associated Press. "We are constantly trying to keep the kids off the track."

Police said Brown and Phaneuf fell asleep on the track while sunbathin

  1. That's horrible, but they were laying ON the train tracks.

  2. THey paid the ultimate price, so I wish them well.

  3. I know that when your directly on the track you can't feel or hear the train , maybe how sound carries you must be to the side. Horrible I couldn't even imagine something like that.

  4. While this was a horrible tragedy, I have to wonder... what did they possibly think would come of them LAYING DOWN ON TRAIN TRACKS?! And it really sucks for the poor train conductor who now has to live with the fact that he ran over two children (even though he was completely not at fault)
