Please give me suggestions on different drills I can do to be better at choking people out. I also train for real life, life or death situations because of my job. And do you know of any good books that show good law enforcement self defense and fighting moves. I'm open to any suggestions too.

  1. Definitely go and train with a partner without the intention of trying to choke them out. When they tap let go otherwise no one will want to train with you.

Visit grappling schools rather than striking ones for your purpose.

Its not always possible to attend classes so if you want to do extra training with chokes, practice with a grappling dummy. You can get them most places nowadays.

  2. My honest opinion is the only way to get better at using chokes is to practice on live people. The easiest choke to master would be the rear naked choke, which in my opinion, is one of the most effective.

If you aren't proficient in this choke, it will not take you long to learn it. Other chokes that are good would the guillotine.

One of the most overlooked chokes are the collar chokes used by judokas. I called it the cross collar choke, where you use your opponent's own clothes to choke him out.

Besides chokes, you might wanna think about other "alternative" ways to subdue your opponent without hurting them, like foot sweeps, throws, takedowns and pins/holds.

Used together, these other methods can help you get in position to apply the choke or put your opponent in a position, where he or she is immobilized, where backup can be called to help you out.

    Good luck.

  3. While going to training and training against a partner is best, you can't do that necessarily in the time between. In between, try choking a tree -- the impossibility of it is a form of resistance training. It'll allow you to put a stronger choke on.

I'm going to link some of Shoto Tanemura's videos from Dailymotion that are specifically self-defense for law enforcement agents. It might give you an idea of how you could differently approach your training, or it might not. Just remember -- if you think you're doing it right, you're not.

The idea, especially in terms of law enforcement, should be to practice techniques, but fight naturally. If you can not take the training and make it your own. Train well -- your life depends on it.

  4. Join a Judo club.  I've worked out with law enforcement people in Judo.  Judo will help you learn chokes and some grappling that will directly carry over to your job.

As for a book that's good for cops:

by George A. Dillman (Author) "To practice effective and humane self-defense, you must: a) Know yourself and understand your attacker; b) Be utterly committed to protecting your own life, and..."

I get NO MONEY for this referal, therefore, this is not spam.

  5. Lots of good advice above except for one thing...

DO NOT TRY TO CHOKE TREES.

Seriously, this does absolutely nothing for you.

In the time off of training live, do curls if you want to strengthen yourself for chokes (since the muscles used are typically biceps and forearms).

Don't use grappling dummies. They are good for conditioning yourself for throws, not for submissions.

The best way to practice chokes is going against a live partner who is aware of them, and their defenses. When you can land chokes on people who know you are trying for them, and know the defenses. Then you know you can land chokes on guys NOT expecting, and unaware of how to defend them.

Choking a tree will not give you a stronger choke. There is literally no resistance or give. You get nothing from it, then what you would have choking the air, or pushing on a wall. While you get some conditioning just from flexing a muscle repeatedly, choking a tree isn't a very effective way to build muscle, or strength.

Doing weight training, or even using a d**n thighmaster which has some resistance and give, will help a tree won't.

If I placed 400lbs of weight on a pulley machine, and you tried pulling it every day, never going through the range of motion to pull it, never budging it, you would never be able to lift it.

However, if I started you at weight you can lift, and had you lift it repeatedly, until it was easy, then moved up in weight, and repeating, then in theory you could one day work yourself up to being able to lift that weight. (body composition, peaking, etc, withheld)

Trying to choke on a tree sounds cool, but it isn't remotely going to do anything practical to help you.... other than that. Everything people said above helps...

  6. I humbly suggest to practice on a younger sibling - brother or sister...  :)

  7. A partner. Go to class. That's where you practice your chokes. Once you have the the physical technique down, its all about setting it up and overcoming resistance. Again, nothing but a partner can help you with that.
