the science and literature starting in medieval germany, the downs and ups of germany, losses of territory but germany is still alive!

Most people will say it's the peaceful reunification between east and west in Germany in 1989/1990. But, no: In my humble opinion, it wasn't. It was the complete defeat of Germany in WWII. That's influencing German and international history maybe for centuries. The cold war isn't over; it just has changed its ways.

I grew up in Germany and spent the last six years of my life here, and I'm much more a criticist of my home country than you seem to be, but it feels good to read that someone likes Germany. I also do like it. What else? It's my home. Being a patriot means change your country for the better, and disagree with the leaders where you find it necessary.

As a half-British, half-German, I would say I find Germany to be one of the most tolerant, open-minded and liberal countries I have ever been to. The experiences and consequences of WW2 have led this country through tough times, but what resulted from it, is the spirit you have today. Yes, we do moan and complain about almost everything (lol), but once you get used to that, living here is quite laid back.

So, I find it fascinating how such an open-minded society resulted from such hate that was spread during the 1930s and 40s. And looking at World History, I think we must label it "unusual" that a country that was spun into a web of hate was not only helped out of it, but also managed to learn from it - the reunification was peaceful, and not a violent revolution.

It seems people do actually learn from history - something which I find very present in Germany these days, though rather on an unconscious level.

I find the time before WWI and WWII the most fascinating when Emperors ruled . Too long to give you the whole recap...but there is a book called "Deutsche Geschichte" ...it's by Manfred Mai and it is easy to read and fascinating.
