  1. Might I introduce another idea?

The AFL seems intent on copying the formulae used by American Football, right down to mid-game entertainment on Grand Final Day (third rate), Draft, free Agents, the whole box and dice.  Allow corporates to be not just sponsors, but owners of teams. Let them put their money into the game, it is no longer the game of the people, but of the corporates.

So why not the idea of 3 Conferences - SWFL (South West) for WA and SA, NEFL (North East) for NT and Qld.,and SEFL for NSW, Tas., and Vic. Structure Conferences into 4 Divisions of whatever number of Clubs best fits. Each Division provides its best club for Finals Competition, 4 from each Conference.

AFL administers the conferences, each runs its local competition, and through a series of AFL conference results criteria, an AFL Final Series involving all three conferences is conducted (Super Bowl) to find the Grand Finallist (Super Bowl Champion).

Do away with the parochial fixture that favours some teams at the expense of others. Introduce a form of the game that crosses parochial State borders. Make it a Final 12, 4 from each of the 3 Conference.  If it is a National Game, at least make it look like it.

  2. i agree.. but include AFLQ in it as well

the southport and mt gravatt teams up here are the best and it would be good 2 see how they compare 2 the vic teams

  3. Good idea and I agree with Kev about getting rid of that stupid pre-season cup who ever remembers who wins it anyway its really just a bunch of scratch matches.

Also they should  also have a return to the real state of origin with state against state and with your idea they could draw on players from both divisions to play in it.

  4. it is a good idea (dont forget QLD and NSW either!!)....

but I dont know if it would work. It would be very costly, crowds would be very small and it wouldnt get much coverage as it would drown out to the Rugby League and the AFL its self.

Works great for soccer in England...but I dont see it working here in AUS!

  5. I have been saying this for a long time now.The way The AFL is going and to make it a TRULY National comp, The AFL would have to expand its league and therefore get rid of the Bullsh*t Cup (Pre-Season) and make the season proper longer. Or make 2 leagues. I can see this happening in my life time. They can have it so the bottom 2 or 3 teams drop down to Div 2 and the top 2 or 3 elevates from Div2 to Div 1.

  6. It is a good idea, but I wouldn't want the AFL to bring in a system like Italian soccer, where teams change divisions every year.

  7. second Div sounds good

you could then have relegation to stop tanking

from teams like Carlton and WCE

  8. I've thought ablout this. The only problem is sponsorship. If a team is relegated to div 2 there would be less sponsor money available to them and that would make it hard to climb back to the top.

I think it could result in the same system as soccer were the teams with money stay at the top eg- Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal. All the other teams are really just making up numbers, and that wouldn't be good for footy.

  9. But in a way those teams are already like the second division, they are different leagues. Think about it - they are where afl players come from and where they are bred and born, it is already like a second division of footy

  10. It may be a good idea but it wouldn't work.

A similar tye system may work in a place like the UK where distances travelled is no-where near what is necessary here. Collingwood complain like merry h**l if they have to leave Melbourne, to play a game, more than four time per year. Imagine the whinging that would be coming from the Victorian teams if this concept was introduced.

Also imagine the costs involved flying two teams & their entourage of coaches & hanger-ons from one side of Oz to the other each weekend.

The logistics would be too complicated - & too expensive to warrant consideration.
