Toshiba have pulled out of HD. It looks like Blu Ray is the way forward, but there is no recorder yet.  I think the price of a Blu Ray recorder will be out of my range for some considerable time, and a viable blu ray recorder still some way down the road.  HD will run side by side for a good while, so I would say that there will be some affordable HDD bargains out there.  I have a Sony 970 which will last me a good while yet and the prices should drop even further.

I still wouldn't mind getting a HD writer for backing up my hard drive.
