Question:

What about my passport?- Home Office?

My mom and I sent our passports to the home office and got back a letter saying it was sent out on the 9th of April. I have bought tickets for the 15th of July to Chicago. However, without my passport & visa I can't make a move. Now, everytime we visit the home office in Croydon ,they say there's nothing they can do =| Is there a chance I can get my passport back BEFORE my flight?

  1. you have to have the passport to move.  a waiting game

  2. Its clear to me from the terms you use in this and other postings that you are waiting for a new British Passport but for your passports from the Home Office at Croydon. If they sent it on 9th April they will have a registration number from the Post Office.  If not they are relying on the record on your file that merely states that the passports have been returned

You need the registration number or at least some evidence of their contact with the postal service.  Have you complained or just contacted your case worker/general enquiries?

You need to contact the Post Office and find out where it is if the HO have not already done so, although I can't imagine why they would not have that information already.  If they say it has been delivered or they have no record then you should write to the appropriate department in the Home Office and claim for the loss of your passports, the cost of the documents and the visas you have inside plus the cost of your tickets to Chicago or the cost of changing the date of travel.  The contract of service was between the Home Office and the Post Office not you and the Post Office so your claim is with the Home Office.

A passport is a very valuable document not only to you but to anyone who steals it and any correspondence with the Home Office should make your position clear including the costs you are incurring and your concern about identity theft.  You could also contact your Embassy (US I believe) to see if has been returned to them - any passports that are found should be because they actually own them not you.

The US Embassy will provide you with emergency/temporary passports at a cost and any visas you have for the UK will be on record so although it will take a little time it can be checked when you return to the UK.  There is still time to do something before your date of travel but your mother will have to hurry

  3. if youv/e a receipt number go on their web site type in ips and youll actually get the time left to wait or phone them and see if you can pick it up at your local office but do it now incase its been stolen in the post

  4. you've left this a bit late - if they sent it out in April

    was it sent registered post?

make an official complaint to the home office and the post office. Report it lost/stolen to the police and GET A CRIME REFERENCE NUMBER.

Go get a replacement passport - check what the system is first - usually going in person is the quickest but costs extra - also check about the system for reporting the old one lost/stolen (this is where the crime ref no comes in).

  5. It`s possible you will get them back but don`t count on them been right `i` sent of for two last year and they put the wrong signature's on the passports my wife had my sign and i had her sign they tried telling me my wife signed mine and i signed hers tossers watch them and check them. they told me to send all new pictures cost me a small fortune said they would reimburse me never got a penny from them.
