What about our civilization?

What lessons do you think Civilization should bring forward to improve our lives in the future? What should Civilization have learned by now, but continues to ignore? I was just curious what other people's opinions would be :)

I think that we should have learned by now that our means of harnessing energy are poison.  Coal, oil, and gas are all poisons that cause cancer, birth defects, emphysema, and other diseases and conditions, and yet we keep using them.  In the very near future, we will either start using cleaner means of getting energy, or our civilization will be doomed.
