Question:

What about pb&j's for dinner?

Every now and then my daughter wants to have a pb&j for dinner when she gets home from daycare. She is 4yrs old and I want to know if this is okay. My boyfriend thinks that she should have a better dinner than that but I think that its okay on occasion. Tonight I gave her one and I also had her eat some little hot dogs .... told her she needed some meat. I know the hot dog things aren't the greatest, they are chicken not mystery meat :)

So what do you think??

  1. When I took my daughter to the Doctor, I told the Dr that my daughter will not eat everything I cook. Now, I am not going to cook a meal just for her because she will not eat baked pork chops with green beans. The Dr. told me if she does not eat what I have prepared for her, she doesn't eat. Sooner or later she will eat what is prepared for her. He says to write down what was made for dinner the nights she does not eat. He reassured me that missing a couple meals was not going to hurt my daughter. Its been like that for the last 6 months.

  2. I mix flax in the jelly to make it actually healthy. PB and J is fine once in a while, and the Peanut butter has protien, so you dont need meat. Veggies and fruit would be the thing to give her with it, as that will balance it out.

  3. Shoot... I resort to quick things like PBJ, dry cereal with fruit and milk, oatmeal, etc for dinner if I don't feel like cooking. Just offer fresh fruit and milk with it, or something else to add some nutrition. It's totally ok though! You could feed her a LOT worse than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches-totinos, kid tv dinners, fast food, fish sticks and french fries, etc... realistically it's not that bad.

  4. On occasion, it is not going to hurt her to have a PB&J, give her a glass of milk and some fruit she will be fine.

  5. That is totally fine! Maybe instead of the hot dogs give her a little fruit medley next time and a glass of milk! You don't have to have meat every night and the PB&J probably didn't go well with the hot dogs...hehe! But honestly, PB&J is fine once in a while and it gives you a night off as far as dinner goes!

  6. Yes, it's okay!  As long as it's once in awhile it's perfectly fine! It's not like you're giving her a bowl of sugar coated lard! (eww that sounds nasty...)

    EDIT: You've inspired me...I just had a PB&J.

  7. PB&J is GREAT for dinner!  Throw in some milk and a fruit and call it a day.  I don't think a meat is as important as a fruit or veggie.

  8. That is totally fine every now and then.  Peanut butter is a good source of protein too.

  9. OF COURSE IT'S OK!!!  As long as you aren't doing this every night!  Sometimes we have pancakes for dinner just to shake things up a little!!!  Get heart shaped cookie cutters to make really special pbj's!!!

  10. I don't know why it wouldn't be okay. The peanut butter has protein in it and most jellies are made with at least some real fruit. Kids that age can be picky eaters, so if she likes something you shouldn't keep her from eating it. It's a great idea to have her eat some meat with it too, that way she is getting more protein.

It sounds like you are a great mom being so concerned about her eating healthy :)

  11. OMG i am a bad mommie.

My son only ate PB&J's for a whole year.  That and fruit.  He is still healthy.  It is fine.  It will not hurt her.

  12. Why not?  My son likes broccoli and chicken for breakfast.  If it's healthy and you'd give it to her for a meal at any other time of the day, I say go for it.  By the way, peanut butter has plenty of protein.  Your daughter doesn't need to eat meat with it, as the PB is basically a meat substitute.  Just give her a serving of carrots, maybe some apple slices and milk, and she's good to go.

  13. There is nothing wrong with a PB&J for dinner! Peanut butter is a source of protein, plus she gets what she needs from the bread group(the bread) and a bit of fruit with the jelly. So technically its not that unhealthy of a dinner. As long as she does eat something else from time to time there is nothing wrong with it. My oldest always wants macaroni and cheese...she doesn't always get it but every once in a while I'll let her eat just that and nothing else if she doesn't want to.

  14. Kids tend to go through food-phases where one particular thing is all they want to eat.  It's normal, and as long as she's only having one sandwich a day, along with a healthy balanced diet, there's nothing wrong with it.

She sounds like a normal 4-year-old to me, and as long as her meals are pretty balanced out, a PB&J per day should be fine.

  15. An occassional PB&J would be a decent dinner.  I think adding fruit and/or veggies (baby carrots, maybe?) would make it better.  I'd skip the little hot dogs-- she doesn't need meat at every meal and the PB has protein anyway.
