I heard some stories about catching stuff on cruises or passengers getting all ill. What is all that about ? Are those isolated situations? should I be concerned about that stuff? Is there anything I need to do to prepare myself for being on a cruise with a alot of people for that amount of time? Any information will be greatly appreciated!

  1. not in your control

  2. First, standard precautions that you should already be taking need to be looked at.

Wash your hands frequently. Hand rails, shaking lots of hands, public areas and the such. Two words, Hand Sanitizer.

If it doesn't look good or smell good, don't eat it.

If someone is coughing or hacking up blood (just kidding) don't be around them.

Second, cruise ships clean constantly, I do mean constantly.

Cruise ships are very clean, they follow very strict guidelines in food preparation, the crew is also very clean. Your worst enemy is your fellow cruise mates that bring stuff with them.

Just go and enjoy, remember that what you ponder on is what comes true. So ponder on the fun and enjoyment you will have.

  3. I just went on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera.  Cruise ships are on heightened cleaning duty to avoid Norwalk virus, it's true, but don't trust hand sanitizers -- they don't kill germs as advertised.

Hospitals started using hand sanitizers and infections increased at an alarming rate.  They all went back to -- that's right, good, old-fashioned, thorough hand washing with soap and water.

That is your best guard against getting sick on board.  Like everyone else has said, avoid people who are sick and wash your hands thoroughly, and often.

Staff have strict instructions not to work if they are sick and to report to the infirmary.  The ship doctor will hold their ship ID until they are cleared to return to work, and meanwhile, they are instructed to stay in their cabins.

Cruise ships ARE a lot cleaner than most places you go in everyday life!

    Go and have fun!

  4. theres something called the Norwalk Virus.  It kind of gives you an upset stomache for a few days.  This is the most common illness on the cruise ships.  It is caused through simple contact much like the cold, but it is easily preventable by just washing your hands.  I just got off Norwegian Cruise line in June and they had an entire system set up of a pure alcohol like solution dispensers all over the ship.  They would pour a small amount of the liquid into your hands which you would then rub over yur hands and kill the germs.  It dried instantly and was really amazing to have that peice of mind.  They are mostly isolated instances so dont be too afraid.  Just wash your hands every once and a while and you'll be fine.

  5. Can't emphasize washing hands enough.  I will use this opportunity here to say my Husband gets totally grossed out when he goes to the men's room and sees people leave without washing their hands....  Folks this needs to change!  So keep your hands washed and have a great time the ships are super super clean.  I totally love cruising, they practically have to kick me off at the end.

  6. just bring some medicine in your bag just "in case."  It costs a fortune on the boat!
