I've been told that the electrical outlets in rome are different from those in the states. I'm concerned about using a curling iron there. Are the electrical outlets different?

  1. Yes, they use different style plugs in Europe.  In Europe, you'll see plugs that look like 2 round pins rather than the 2 flat pins we use in the U.S.  You can get the adapters at Walmart, Target or any general merchandise or travel/luggage store.

Many of the newer electronic appliances have dual voltage capability (most laptops, cell phone chargers, MP3 chargers, etc..).  You can even buy special travel hair dryers and curling irons that are dual voltage.  Check the transformer that plugs into the wall for a statement like AC ~110V/220V.  If it says this, you'll only need the small flat pin to round pin converter.  You **won't** need the larger, bulky, voltage adapter portion.

  2. My mom bought a curling iron at a store when we arrived. We walked around town and found a little store with all sorts of stuff. Mom bought a curling iron. It was cheap. And everytime we go to Italy, she has an Italian curling iron, so we don't have worry about bringing converter plugs.

  3. The electrical outlets are different, but the 'converter' plugs are freely available and relatively inexpensive. If you cannot find one locally, you will almost certainly be able to find one at the airport before you leave (although they will probably be more expensive than buying one somewhere else).

The good thing, once you have bought it, you can use it again in the future :-)

  4. Yes, they are different. They have 220 voltage as opposed to 110V in the U.S. You will need an adaptor to use your curling iron. Adaptors are sold at any luggage store and you can pick one up at the airport.
