What accounts for the similarities in life forms found in the same type of biome in geographically separated areas?

  1. It's because of convegent evolution, which is the process whereby organisms that aren't related independently evolve similar traits as a result of having to adapt to similar environments.

    An example of this is the similar nature of the wings of insects, birds, pterosaurs, and bats. All four serve the same function and are similar in structure, but each evolved independently and not from a common winged ancestor.
