First off, I hope this question does not offend anyone. I am asking because me and a co-worker were talking this morning and she mentioned that her friend wore a dress “country”. I have always had my own definition of someone being country but I have never heard it used in that context. But when she said “I took her to look at bedroom sets; you know she’s so country she’s not used to buying anything” I knew exactly what she was talking about. My husband is from what I would call the country. It’s a small town that has a few grocery stores and you have to drive 20 to 30 minutes to get to a mall or major department store. They have some restaurants but no movie theater or anything like that. I also refer to my husband as country because of his southern accent (we live in Texas).

  1. Not offended,I'm country and proud. We don't buy alot of things because we think carefully what we really want to live with and then do it,once done its there until its worn out. That's called getting your money's worth. We may not be quite up to date clothes wise but we buy few  but well made quality and yes we do know the difference. We think saving for a rainey day is more important than owning the latest dvd..My point is its just a different set way of looking at the world and our place in it.I bet your husband is happier than your friends, what do you think?Don't think that we are stupid or have no manners, maybe your mother in law is just a little offended because to her she has the best of both worlds.I know I do.

  2. Any type of NASCAR emblem.

A blue kitchen with a duck motif

    mauve silk flower arrangements

a Dixie flag anywhere on your vehicle.

yellow gold and silver rings at the same time.

Belt buckles (oversized) on men.  Wrangler jeans on men or Lee jeans on women.

EDIT:  I do not think your references can be construed as offensive.  "Country" isn't a deragatory term: it's a fact of a certain geographic/socio-class.  It's not a minority-it's a chosen group.

  3. Using the words "dang" or "fixin" EVER.

  4. Tractor tires in the front yard used as planters.

Living in a double wide trailer is considered high society.

Naming all the NASCAR drivers, but not able to name their state's capital.

Having a Cowboy Up or Cowgirl Up sticker on the four-tone pickup truck.

Doing your family tree and only finding out it has only one branch.
