  1. Get rid of corn for ethanol is first step. Rice prices will follow with a huge drop in price.

  2. Rich countries, especially countries without their own food source, buy up as much food as they can and block their market for international consumers. These countries need to stop and open their markets.

This whole dilemma started when Australia's wheat production declined due to excessive drought. So, this caused a lot of countries to get scared and buy up all the food and hoard it. Then the food prices soar because of the lack of food in the market. There's your problem and here's your solution. Stop hoarding food.

This whole thing is so wicked and cruel because the poorest people suffer the most. They are the ones who cannot afford the food.

Comment for unabletoplaytennis: Ethanol is different type of corn from the type of corn that we eat. Ethanol is made from corn intended for animal feed. However, it will have an effect on the food prices because once the price of corn for Ethanol rises, then the animal feed will rise, causing farmers to raise the price of livestock in order to cope with expensive corn feed.

Comment for johann_s: You are comparing apples with oranges. Triage only pertains to medical severity and is limited in theoretical observation of the market. Again, Triage has nothing to do with the food market. Try proving your statement that many people hold the same idea as your idea of allowing the weak to fritter away and die, while the rich live in excessive luxury and moral deprivation. You are perhaps the one out of billion people who believe in such nonsense.

  3. triage.  quit coddling the rich and worrying about people who probably won't make it, or demand a tremendous amount of resources to do so.

of course, if you believe in so-called 'free market capitalism' (there's no such thing as 'free market'), there is no problem.  money will take care of things. still others think god will.  ( i only add these as perspectives many people hold. )

  4. First and foremost you need a stronger govermental role in many of the countries that face hunger issues.  Mogadishu was controlled by two or three warlords that caused that epic famine.  With a little stability it will ease some of the other situations that seem to evolve from it.
