What activities are better for applying to top u.s. universities?

Anything that shows that you are well rounded and take on responsibility is good.  There is no magic formula.

While you need activities, the truth is that they are very easy to lie about, because they are very hard to verify.  Universities know this, so don't rely on them as much as people think they do.

The most important things for getting into a top school are GPA, the difficulty of classes (e.g., AP or Honors classes), SAT scores and admissions essay.

The admissions essay is where you can really make yourself stand apart from the other applicants.
