  1. The BCCI didn't want to share TV coverage of international cricket with Mr Modi's TV channel, so he created another series to get ratings and advertising revenue instead. A carbon copy of Kerry Packer vs the Australian Board in the 1970s.

  2. Zee Telefilms, which is apart of the Essel group promoted by Subhash Chandra bid for the telecast rights to the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Although their bid was the  highest , it could not get the telecast rights. In 2004, Subhash Chandra again bid for telecast rights and ended up in an inconclusive court battle. He made another bid for the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy rights and once again lost.

These failure in getting the telecast rights prompted him to create a private cricket league with the ame of Indian Cricket League parrallel to BCCI.   To counter the ICL, BCCI startedtheir own Cricket League in the name of Indian Premier League.

  3. IPL was created because ICL (INDIAN CRICKET LEAGUE) was created....

Many international players were dragged to ICL & BCCI got challenged so they thought that instead of ICL making their monopoly.. why dont we???

  4. Greed !!!!

  5. IPL was in the channels much before ICL was created. It was a brainchild of Mr. Lalit Modi to make money .

    Also to provide entertainment.
