What advantages do caterpillars have over butterflies?

My friend is depressed after a stroke in his mid-30s left him unable to use his left arm or walk without a cane. He says he feels like a butterfly who went back into the coccoon and came out a caterpillar. One friend pointed out that caterpillars live longer. Anything else?

Caterpillars have the potential to become beautiful and magnificant creatures. They have more legs/arms, too! :)
