I was born in Santurce 35 years ago but left when I was a toddler to grow up mostly on the mainland. I have always wanted to go back to live in PR for some reason and am thinking about heading there to settle down in 2 years time. I speak okay Spanish (I guess it could be better - but I can get by :-)) ... but actually know nothing about the island except for the food, the music and that my heart is telling me to head back there. Any advice?

  1. it's awesome.love the culture and people there.and the chiquita's are just lovely!

  2. Dont use u-haul dude. They ripped me off!

  3. The island is beautiful, the people are very nice and decent, the food is excellent.

But, is very expensive, you need to be careful where you go, you can't go with the mentality that in the USA things are done this way because they will tell you to go back to the USA, you need to be patient that things can take a loooot of time to be done.

I have good friends there and I like to visit them. Just be careful where you move, enjoy their natural beauties, the beaches, etc. Again just be careful, they are nice people, but don't mess with them.

  4. Have a job lined up before you go.  That's the best advice I can give you.  Also, crime is pretty high, be careful where you rent or buy.

  5. It's a nice place, but I would suggest visiting first. I lived on St. Croix, next door, for awhile.  The prices on both islands are quite high, as housing is expensive and almost all food is imported, so it costs at least double what it would cost you on the mainland.  The economy is relatively poor, with per capita income being about half that of the poorest U.S. state (Mississippi).   Average wage is about $8 an hour, with 44% of the population below the poverty line.  Crime, esp. drug-related crime, is quite high.

  6. I would just point out how similar it is to the American mainland. Hard to tell the difference these days. The island beauty is nice.
