In my experience, coaches will have a mixed choice of bats in high school, but only aluminum bats in the little league.  You get more distance with aluminum bats, and I think that's why they are used more often with younger players - makes the kids feel good to knock one over the fence.  

If you're playing ball and your coach only has aluminum bats, ask if you can bring a wooden bat to practice.  If you like the results and your coach doesn't mind, you can bring your own bat to games - or donate a wooden bat to the team.
