Question:

What age did you let your daughter start wearing small amounts of makeup?

My daughter is in 5th grade and all the little girls are wearing makeup this year. She wanted to get some and I wasn't entirely comfortable with this but I did agree on a tube of brownish black waterproof mascera and a tube of light pink lip gloss. I told her that was the only makeup she could wear from now until High school. Is that too strict? Her friends wear black eyeliner but honestly my daughter is blonde, pale and light eyes- she looks awful and somewhat trashy with black liner. Blush and eyeshadow is just too much for me, too. I told her that for dances she can wear a little glitter eye shadow and that's it.

Does that seem about right for her age? Or too much?

  1. In my opinion, too much. To me, it seems like she just wants to follow the crowd and be like the other girls who are wearing makeup. Perhaps they're bugging her about not wearing makeup, which is why she asked. In 6th grade, I only wanted a second set of ear piercings because all the other girls had them. Now I don't wear earrings at all.

I think makeup on girls makes them looks trashy and fake. Rather than allow my daughter makeup, I will be teaching her that she is beautiful without it and she doesn't need it to feel pretty. Learning to love herself as she is without having to draw on her face will be much more of an accomplishment in both mine and her life, and she will grow up happy, proud and confident in herself.

I am proud to say I have never worn makeup and I love myself for who I am. If someone cannot accept me for who I am without makeup, then they are not worth my time. I hope to instill that same belief in my daughter.

  2. I think that's fine. I probably would've only let her wear lip gloss at this point. maybe let her wear a little more in like eighth grade. but most can wait until high school.

5th grade is definitely too young for a bunch of black eyeliner. I'd question why these other girls' mothers are letting them do that...or if they know.

  3. Well, my 8 year old wears a little lipgloss, my 10 year old wears lipgloss and a little glittery eyeshadow for special occasions, an my 12 year olds can wear lipgloss, mascara, a small amount of natural colored eyeliner, and a small amount of eyeshadow. They can't wear anything clownish, however :). It's not too much.

  4. I started to when I was in fourth grade, but that was due to I was in dance classes. We did recitals, and got to wear make up. My mom made me take off the heavy/ clownish looking stuff before we left backstage.

When I got to be in sixth grade she gave me light stuff such as clearish pink lip gloss, light eye shadows, and nail polish. She told me that as I learn to wear that right then I could learn to wear the other stuff, and other colors right I could have more make up. I do not have a daughter, but if I did I think I would follow what my own mom did.

  5. i think what ur doing is fine...once i started wearing makeup. wasnt a big deal.. now i barely wear it. i got to wear make up when i was 14 9th grade

  6. My oldest daughter is in 5th grade too. Im so glad she goes to a charter school and they arent allowed to wear makeup. Plus I dont even own or wear it so she isnt too interested in it anyway. I think you are doing the right thing. That seems like enough makeup for a 5th grader. I cant believe girls are wearing that much makeup nowadays. Good luck.

  7. I think what your doing is just right. Its not too much but its just enough to make her happy. One thing I do not agree with is that that is all she can wear till high school. I think you should allow her a little more make up freedom around 7th or 8th grade.

    Hope I Helped :)

  8. My mom started letting me wear makeup in 5th grade too.  Honestly, my mom let me wear as much as I wanted to because her theory was that by the time I was older, it wouldn't be so important to me.  She was pretty accurate actually.  By high school, I rarely ever wore makeup and even now, only on special occasions.  My mom bought me my first cosmetic kits, it was all coordinated colors that went pretty well with my complexion, you could try finding something like that.
