I took my 6 week old to the doctor today and talked to him about what age he recommends babys turn over to cow's milk. He said 9 months is a good age since they start solids at 6 months their digestive system is mature enough to handle cow's milk. What age did your doctors recommend? And what age do you think baby's should turn over to cow's milk? I'm currenly 100% breastfeeding.

  1. Very small amounts of cows milk are usually fine at 9 months, as part of baby's 'solid foods.' (Either cooked into foods or very small amounts in a cup.)  But baby shouldn't not be weaned from breastmilk onto whole milk until after one year -- if you must wean before then, he needs formula.

  2. You should wait until one year to start a baby on cow's milk. Before that it can cause allergies or digestive troubles, as their system isn't mature enough to handle milk protein before then.

I'd see another doctor if I were you.

  3. It's generally best to wait until a year. Most babies' digestive systems are still too immature to digest the complex proteins in cow's milk. (Heck, many adults can't digest it... our bodies were not built to drink cow's milk!) I have never heard of a doctor recommending it before a year. If you do switch to cow's milk before then, be sure it is homogenized and I would also recommend supplementing it with breastmilk or an infant formula.

  4. 1 years old, and for yogurt 8 months and over

  5. 1 year, I slowly introduced him to it when he turned 11 months

  6. 1 year

  7. 12 months is the norm...maybe as early as 10-11 months but i wouldnt earlier than that...

  8. at 1 yr i started my 2 kids on whole milk

  9. i put my son on it at 10 months and it worked out fine.. just make sure you have gas drops handy for the first month or so while they are getting used to it!

  10. Good job on the breastfeeding! But it really gets to me how cow's milk has become this right of passage...we don't drink cow's milk in our home.  Your baby can get the necessary vitamin D by being outside in the sun for 10-15 mins/day.  Just another way for them to keep the diary industry's pockets fat.  Glad to hear you're breastfeeding though!

  11. My Health Visitor recommends whole milk at 12 months. 11 1/2 months sounds OK but 9 months sounds a little early.
