today my 10 yr old son refused to hold my hand for the first time, i didn't force him because i don't want to embarrass him but this made me think how in a few years he wont even wont to go out with his mother :(, i have a 8 year old son who still holds my hand and a 6 yr old daughter as well, and this question just popped into my head how old were your kids when/if they stopped

  1. he is in that phase

    i went through that

now i have no problem in hold or linking my my mums hand

  2. Sounds about right.  10 seems right on.

If you're worried about safety, ask him if you can "count on him to look out for his sister and hold her hand across the street, since he's the oldest."

  3. I have a 18yr old and a 11yr old both are boys, both of them stop wanting to hold hands about 10yrs of age. Now as far as the hanging out with me, as longs as I'm not doing anything too girly they still want to be around me. I just dont push it upon them.

  4. id say now is a good time to implement the 3 foot rule (if you wont hold my hand you have to stay within 3 feet of me)

10 seems like a normal age to stop. thats just going into middle school, right? time to act tough you know.

  5. My daughters are 6 and 2, so they both have to hold my hand. But I would say by the time they are 10, if they can be trusted not to do anything dangerous, I would say you could willingly stop holding hands. The only time I would say hold hands after 10 is if they are being bad or it is very crowded and you don't want to lose your child! Remember, safety before embarrassment!!

  6. I think my son (now 11) was about 10 as well. His 8 year old brother still happily holds my hand. They wont hold each others hands to cross the road though but they will hold their baby brothers hand. I think boys are very different to girls-I remember still holding my dads hand to cross the road at about 12.

  7. Ahaha, dont feel bad about it. Hes growing up. I bet he already likes girls-but wont admit it just yet of course.

Ive got a 10 year old girl, she still holds my hand when we go out in public-maybe walking through the mall. But i know soon the day will come when she wont want to hold Daddies hand and  will want to hold some boys hand in the mall instead!

  8. my kids are 13, 13, 11 and 8. No way would my 13 yr olds allow me to hold their hand and neither would my 11 yr old. I would get a look and they would say "mooom" LOL

I still hold my 8 yr old's hand sometimes and he doesn't seem to mind at all.....YET. It's only natural....I always say to my kids when they act embaressed to be around me "you do realize every other kid around has a mother too, not just you?" LOL they act like they are the only ones with a mother and are embaressed about it.

I have to admit though, my kids are better than most. I mean I can still give them all a quick hug in public and they are okay with that....I'm actually allowed on field trps and school events to volunteer so that's good LOL

  9. Our daughter is 8 and still holds my hand. Its just a sense of security.

  10. Well In my opinion boys are more embarased to hold their mother's hand than girls, there comes an age for everything my brother stopped wanting to hold my mother's hand when he was 10 also, just a common thing that happens.

  11. My son is 4 and of course, I still make him hold my hand. I think around age 7 is probably an appropriate time to end the hand holding. I'm surprised your son is just now refusing. In my opinion a 10 year old does not need to hold his mother's hand.
