3 or 4, but it is up to the child's and the parent's need. Some kids are more mature than others and they would benefit from socializing with other children from an earlier age than others. Usually children at age 3-4 get tired easily and a long day away from home is not the best for them. Some kids truly enjoy preschool some don't. Depends on the teachers, the quality of the school, depends on the type of activities they do. Introduce the child to the school gradually, let him/her spend a bit more and more time at school and see how things are.

They say you can start your child at school from the age of 4 1/2 yo. It mostly should depend on thier develpment stage. They need to be socially and emotiononally ready for this step. If they are not ready in these areas it can really affect they handle school and it is so hard to make up for lost time. You need to remember your child is better off to wait the extra 12 months to ensure a good start to thier schooling then to start them too soon.

If a child is not ready for school, they will tell you so. Some parents often delay the start of school for 1 year to make sure the child is mature enough to start school. This gives them confidence. Many others want to go back to work early or save preschool fees, they push the kids into school a little early. I feel that when a child is immature and small, the official start age is actually too early. I have seen several kids starting school early and never manage to perform well for at least 5 more years. Generally kids that start late tend to perform better. If they get bored because they are too smart, they can skip a grade.
