  1. Depends on what you want him/it for. Some of the large breeders have been selling colts gelded in th winter they were born. Therefore stopping them being used as stallions with their prefix.

Many people allow the colt to mature for a few years and allow the hormones to develop the body.

    Cost is also very variable.

  2. Cost is totally dependent on your vet, some are more expensive than others.

A colt can be gelded at any age, but the later you leave it the more likely he is to develop coltish behaviour.  If you do not geld a horse until he is 4 or 5 years old, they quite often spend the rest of their lives thinking they are still entire!

I think the most usual time for a racehorse to be gelded is in the autumn of the yearling year, though I have seen gelded foals being offered for sale.

  3. A colt can be gelded at any age,as long as everything is down.I normally have it done after six months, and before yearling.I don't believe the old wives tale that it stunts growth if done to early.I know of a colt locally that was gelded at six months, and grew up to be 16 hands tall.(was not a draft horse either). Normal price in my area is $75 to $100.

  4. I don't know how much it costs since I've never had it done...

Gelding can stunt the horse's growth, so you don't really want to do it too early.  On the other hand, you kinda want to do it early because it calms the horse a little bit and makes it easier to train.  either way, you're not going to wait for them to be fully grown because they're not completely fully grown until they're 4 or 5.  We had one at my barn gelded this summer and he was 3 and that's kinda late... we bought him from someone who hadn't gelded him just because they weren't sure what they were gonna use him for, so they didn't want to rush into gelding him.  I'd say they're probably gelded between 1 and 2 years old.
