  1. Any vehicle manufactured before January 1st 1973 is eligible for historic tax, which is free. Many manufacturers can supply a build sheet or give you similar evidence of build date to supply the DVLA with, if you give them your chassis number.

  2. You must display a road fund licence on UK roads, but there is no charge for vehicles manufactured before January 1st 1973, also electric vehicles get free road tax (eg milk floats).

To get a tax disc you will still need insurance and a current MOT certificate.

  3. Yes Tory Government brought in 25 year rolling exemption from paying, but "New" Labour fixed it from 1 Jan 1973, so car BUILT before then were exempt.

I think this has changed to REGISTERED before 1/1/73, so check!

  4. Just as an additional bit of info, it's the actual date of manufacture, NOT the date of registration, so if you have a car such as an MG where the owners' club keep a copy of the production records, you mey get free road tax even if your car wasn't registered until 1975 or later.

  5. It doesn't work on the cars age.

A vehicle manufactured before 1973 is tax exempt.

  6. Must be 1972 or earlier.

Edit: Some history, the Conservatives allowed a rolling 25-years in order to qualify.  It was one of the first things Gordon Brown changed when Labour got into power in 1997 - hence 1997 minus 25 equals 1972.  Car hating labour.. another example thereof.

  7. 25 years
