  1. Yes, age discrimination is illegal in the U.S. As long as someone can physically do the job, they can't be fired purely because of age. I actually worked with the oldest F/A (at the time) in the industry. She used to do First Class Aisle (physically pretty easy). She was 78!

Many F/A's physically do give out before retirement age and also, with all the up's and down's of the industry, many end up taking physical/personal/maternity leaves and just not returning. Also, many female F/A's like myself end up quitting directly or indirectly because of their children. Sometimes a husband gets a great job and the F/A no longer needs to work. Sometimes they move somewhere that it's impossible for her to continue.

But in some parts of the world, they still have rules like age limits for hiring and/or age limits for working. Some don't allow the F/A to marry or if so, she has to quit when she's pregnant.

You see that many of these rules don't apply to men so not surprisingly, men can often continue longer than women.

Some airlines hire ex-F/A's to work on the ground. This doesn't happen all that often because those on the ground have to live closer to the airport than the F/A's have to. I used to travel by train 2 hours to work but I only had to do that 3-4 times a month (round trip). "Commuting" by plane or car is also common. I couldn't have taken a ground job because of distance and language requirements. As far as pay and training go, that doesn't match up that well with working in the air (usually).

Many F/A's have education and work experience which they can tap into again once they are on the ground for good. It's considered "public contact" work which many hotels and tourist industry jobs require. F/A's also often have language skills which can also be put to good use in other ways.

  2. Depends on the country and company. In America, a flight attendant can work until she can no longer pass her yearly re-qualifications.

However, in some countries F/As still have to be below a certain age, weight and single. In America, there are no specific guidelines like that any longer. We have flight attendants that are in their 70s!!
