My son just turned 4 in March but my mother inlaw is now telling me that there's a new law that say he will have to be in kindergarten this fall!! But last year when i was going to put him in a preschool she told me that he wasn't old enough that he wouldn't get in. Which after school started and it was to late i found out she was wrong. Can anyone give me a link to the nebraska law about kindergarten i really need to know.

  1. Most children have to start kindergarten at either age 5 or 6 in the state of Nebraska.  The date that is used to determine age is October 15.  That means if your child turns 5 on October 16th, they will NOT be allowed into the district until the following year. (Unless their birthday falls between Oct. 15 and Feb. 1, they are tested at a high ability, and it is approved by the appropriate district personnel.)

A lot of parents are choosing to hold students until they are 6 to help with maturity levels, however it should be determined on a child by child basis.

You said that your child just turned 4 in March.  He will not be allowed in school next fall.  He would be allowed in pre-k classes if you choose to enroll him in such.  You will actually have until the 2010-2011 school year to start him in Kindergarten.  In short, your mother in law is incorrect in her knowledge.

The link I proved below is put out by the state department of education and I think it would be a good resource for you in determining your child's readiness.

  2. pull up your citys school district website

at 4 your son would go to pre k which in my state is optional

5 is required by law that they be in some form of school public private or homeschool
