fingerplays are generally aimed at ages 2-4 though any child appreciates them. Ages 3-4 can appreciate them best and reproduce them with you.

3-5 because they would have a clear understanding of what you are doing. Also they can understand, as they can communicate to you (Speech) if they are enjoying it. Also the child's imagination is at its best when they have a good understanding in the world around them, they would have interacted more.

If you mean that they participate with the words and motions, I think a somewhat precocious 2 year old, especially a girl, would have fun with that, although it will remain a challenge to get it right. Those younger would definitely enjoy watching and hearing it.  

Other than that it strikes me as a 3 and 4 year old activity.

I think it would be great for 2-3yr olds. The older 4's and 5's aren't going to have much interest in it (too "baby" for them).

you can sing songs like this and others to a child of any     age from birth. They don't have to be able to sing it themselves. Studies show that the rhyming words in nursery rhymes help a child make sense of language quicker. Studies also show that children who are introduced to nursery rhymes at a young age and hear and sing them on a regular basis gain better literacy skills. They not only learn to read at a younger age but also stay ahead of children who don't sing nursery rhymes in the pre school years.

When I taught in a daycare, the 1s-early 4s really liked this. I teach kindergarten now and they have no interest in it.
