What age to buy First Base Mitt?

I'm considering purchasing a first base mitt for my son, but I'm curious if there is a recommended age at which a player should switch from a standard glove to a mitt. Also, if a player goes to a mitt too early, what are the ramifications?

I would purchase a first baseman's mitt for your son when he begins playing on "regulation fields" (90 feet basepaths, etc.).

I'm not aware if there is a recommended age or not.

If your son becomes too dependent on the first baseman's mitt (rather than proper form when fielding balls) due to its size, he may have difficulty using another glove model later. Depending on your son's age, the mitt may be too large for him to properly use it in the field.

you could buy one at any  age but make sure you also have a regular one too, just incase your son gets moved around. You should probably really wait until highschool1

I don't think there is much ramifications for getting it to early.  The only thing I can think of is that it locks your son into that position if its the only glove he has.  I really wouldn't buy one till he is in Babe Ruth because that is when most players start focusing on 1 or 2 main positions.  Little League is more about helping them discover their talents and trying many positions.

i'm 16 i started using a first baseman's mitt in 7th grade, i'd say it depends a little on the skill level his team/league is at, though.  For example, in the recreation leagues the kids my age didn't start using them when i did and they didn't throw nearly as hard, i played AABC travel. I currently have a first baseman's mitt and a regular mitt which i use to pitch and sometimes play right field.  but they take some getting used to so i would wait until the off season to buy one so your son can practice with it a little.  they are also generally cheaper in the off season.
