Laws for work permits vary from state to state. However, most places, like shops or food service places, don't hire anyone under 16. More demanding and full time jobs typically require you to be 18, but if you convince your employer that you're mature and dedicated and smart enough to do a good job in your interview, then you can be hired. It's just about having a work permit.

You can get a work permit at 14 but very few places will hire you because of childlabor laws, you have a better chance at a job at 16 or atleast 15 (you can bag groceries then).  Some places won't even think about hiring a minor because of the labor laws though (can't work to many hours, have to be off by a certain time because of curfew, can't run certain machines....)
