If you are flying in from Europe you may find connection to Stuttgart. But you can fly into Frankfurt form almost any where.

One of the reasons Heidelberg is so popular is its proximity to Frankfurt. Lots of travellers visit one of the trade fairs or fly in and out of Europe through Frankfurt and thus visit Heidelberg as an easy day trip from Frankfurt.

Personally I find Heidelberg to be overrated. Sure, if you are in Frankfurt anyway it is well worth the visit, but I would never travel across half the world just to see it.
